The rapidly growing Indian economy has placed intense stress on transportation infrastructure already suffering from a substantial deficit in capacity and efficiency. Intelligent Transport Systems (ITS) are needed today, more than ever, to ensure that traffic is managed efficiently and to prepare India for its future growth.
Promisingly, the NHAI, under the National Highways Development Programme (NHDP), has earmarked INR 3.3 lakh crores towards building highways, expressways, by-passes and bridges until 2015 and it is estimated that approximately INR 2 lakh crores would come from the private sector. This programme will require investment in ITS frameworks across India and the government has already awarded concessions to 32 companies for implementing intelligent solutions in line with it’s impressive 20 kms a day highway building programme.
Recently, Mysore was the first Indian city to implement a city-wide ITS network of core technologies that include GPS and information and communication technologies. There are further projects in the pipeline across India such as Hyderabad Outer Ring Road, implementation of ITS in Indore, Pune, etc. According to the Centre for Development of Advanced Computing (C-DAC), there is a need to implement ITS in at least 200 cities and towns across India. Harnessing the benefits of ITS, including technologies such as Weigh-in-Motion (WIM), Variable Message Sign (VMS) and Area Traffic Management System (ATMS), to drive an improved understanding of traffic trends and offer effective solutions will help in easing the stress on Indian transportation infrastructure.
The 2nd Annual Intelligent Transport Systems India conference has been developed to profile and define the key issues, benefits and challenges associated with the latest ITS technologies, systems and processes which can be effectively implemented in the Indian market. This event will address the challenges associated with meeting the huge demand for infrastructure and technology, such as implementing ITS frameworks nationwide and setting up standards for operating and maintaining ITS frameworks.
